EXCLUSIVE September 1998 was a watershed in the nation's political landscape. Never before had Malaysians witnessed such infighting in Umno.

On Sept 2, they saw the sacking of the deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was also finance minister. He was arrested eight days later.

Old and young alike took to the streets in the thousands in October. Ethnic barriers were breached as people demanded justice and screamed for reformation …

Malaysiakini looks at what happened in late 1998 and we will feature interviews with some of those involved in the events of that year in the coming days ...
